Selection Antibiotics, Plant Cell Culture. Synonym: Cefotaxim sodium
C16H16N5NaO7S2
M.W.: 477.45
Cefotaxime is a broad spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Chemically, it is closely related to the penicillins, but is not degraded by β-lactamases. Resistance is based on cephalosporinase production. Many bacteria possess naturaly occurring cephalosporinases, which are induced in the presence of this product, rendering them resistant to the effects of cephalosporin compounds.
Non toxic to plant cells. Inhibitor of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Inhibits the crosslinking of peptidoglycan by binding and inactivating transpeptidases. High activity against gram negative bacteria. Often used for elimination of Agrobacterium species after inoculation. Resistant to beta-lactamase activity.
Cefotaxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is active against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. In addition, cefotaxime blocks the division of cyanobacteria and lower plant organelles/plastids such as the photosynthetic organelles of Glaucophytes and chloroplasts of bryophytes.
This product is soluble in water (50 mg/ml)
For plant cell culture, it is typically used at 50-250 mg/L to enhance regeneration and shoot development (initiation and elongation).
