A kind of hydroxycinnamic acid. Synonym: 4-Hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid
C10H10O4
MW:194.18
Ferulic acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid with antioxidant properties that is present in the cell walls of plants such as wheat, rice, peanuts, coffee, oranges, and apples. Its antioxidant activity has been shown to act synergistically with vitamins C and E, reducing thymine dimer formation in skin exposed to UVB irradiation. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that ferulic acid and its derivatives may have direct antitumor activity and pro-apoptotic effects in cancer cells. Ferulic acid has also been examined in the process of skin lightening due to its ability to inhibit tyrosinase, the key enzyme in melanogenesis.
